An Introduction

Chinese Movie Database is the database of mainly Chinese language movies. The Database include 1) movies whose main dialogue is in standardised spoken Chinese (mandarin or putonghua) or regional dialects (e.g. Cantonese), 2) early (1910-1930’s) silent movies made by Chinese filmmakers, 3) movies not in Chinese but set in China, or are closely related to Chinese society, culture and history, and 4) movies not in Chinese but in which Chinese talents play important or starring roles. For the movies in 3) and 4) you will see a [non-Chinese] tag attached to them.

Maggie Cheung plays Ruan Lingyu in the re-created Goddess (1934) scene in The Actress (1991)Besides the common language, Chinese films, in most of the cases,  can all claim their root in 20-30’s Shanghai film industry. So instead of breaking down Chinese-language movies according to regional boundary, I built a database covering all Chinese movies (before- and post-1949 of mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Singapore and other regions). Last ten years see the frequent cooperation between different regions in finance, management and talent, thus further blurring of the line.

Chinese Movie Database is originally set up only for films. Starting from 2006, Chinese TV programmes have also been included. TV programmes include TV series, single TV drama, TV Movie and TV documentaries. I’m also looking into a new format of movie recently. Short digital videos are flourishing and have gained lots of audiences. The quality of some (like those by Danwei TV) is pretty high. I think Chinese Movie Database should start to include them at some time.

is this site restricted to chinese language only? Are queries in English acknowledged? I typed in Mei Lanfang and there was no reference.
    Thank you

Chinese Movie Database has both Chinese (simplified/traditional) and English versions. You can search English title/name/company. If you search ‘Mei Lanfang’ http://www.dianying.com/en/searchform.php you will find a 1926 documentary of Mei Lanfang http://www.dianying.com/en/title.php?titleid=mlf1926 . However if you search ‘Mei Lan Fang’ you will find three Mei Lanfang biographies in planning/production stage. I’ll admit our search facility is not as sophisticated as Google which often guesses what you really want to find and torelates to certain extent mis-spelling or different ways of spelling. So you will have to vary the search string a bit.

    The Colour of Justice
An absorbing courtroom drama examining racism on a London police force
    by Michael Scott Moore
    SF Weekly, May 8-14, 2002
This topical play from England is just an edit of transcripts from a trial over the 1993 death of a young black man, Stephen Lawrence, at the hands of white thugs in suburban London. The trial investigated racism on the police force, asking why the thugs were never arrested. TheatreFIRST presents it at the Oakland YWCA in full courtroom style, with the audience posing as jury, listening to 10 barristers grill a parade of witnesses. The vérité quality of the conversations is boosted by the sheer variety of London types who take the stand: surly constables, diffident inspectors, helpful Irish Catholics, defiant street punks, and the bitter, shattered Lawrence family. It amounts to an absorbing three hours of theater, although the outcome is never in doubt — we don’t wonder if the righteous team of investigating lawyers is wrong to smell racism on the breath of London cops. What’s fascinating is the way playwright (or “editor”) Richard Norton-Taylor explores the subtleties of prejudice through lapses in police work and defensive outbursts in the officer testimonies. Out of the sprawling 36-member cast, Terry Lamb, Anna Ishida, and Patrice Lukulu Binaisa give especially strong performances, and so does Veneita Porter, as Stephen’s mother, wondering if the police “would not want to dirty their hands with the blood of a black man.”

HI, I would like to know the name of a movie I saw years ago; I found it very sad. It was about a little girl and her brother, their parents prefered her brother and she felt mad about it. One day there was a movie projection on the street and she and her brother stay at home, but they go to the roof to see the movie, suddenly her brother falls of the roof and die. Since that their parents hate her.
It was a chinese drama, I want to see it again. Please help me to remember the name.

Have I missed something: when looking at English Pages for a film, there used to be a link to get to the Chinese version of the film. It’s gone, It seems something is wrong in the positioning of the graphic place holder in English.

By the same token, what is missing is a link for the English version on the Chinese pages; titles in English and Chinese are so confusing, it would be a big help.

    thanks

    Dear whom adminster this website,

Hello. I’m a student at MS program in Korea.
I’m researching how Chinese film industry has changed after WTO accession and during searching data for Chinese film industry, I found this website.
I’m wondering if you have box-office data for each Chinese film produced and screened in mainland China during the period 1990-2011.
If you have box-office data, I’m wondering if I can buy that data from you.
    Please, help me.
I’ll look forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you.

I rarely comment, however after reading a few of the responses on Chinese Movie Database Blog » Blog Archive » An Introduction. I do have 2 questions for you if it’s okay. Could it be simply me or do a few of the comments come across like they are coming from brain dead people? :-P And, if you are posting on other sites, I’d like to follow everything fresh you have to post. Would you post a list of the complete urls of your social networking sites like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?
