Edinburgh will host the "UK's biggest ever festival of Chinese films" next month (March 2007), screening Chinese films from early silent masterpiecs to latest release. The copies of some of them are rarely available outside China and have to be imported from China especially for this festival, among which is Fei Mu's Spring in a Small Town. Actress Maggie Cheung and director Xie Fei are invited to the festival and will introduce films through their careers. The festival will open with Maggie Cheung's Centre Stage (aka The Actress), a biopic of Ruan Lingyu, the biggest star of Chinese silent film era. A specially commissioned score composed by Kimho Ip will accompany the screening of Ruan Lingyu's Goddess (1934).
The organisers of the festival tried to select films that best represent the history and development of Chinese language films in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Some films, for example, Zheng Junli's Crows and Sparrows (1949), Li Han Hsiang's musical The Love Eterne (1963), Tang Shu-Shuen's The Arch (1970), and Xie Fei's Black Snow (1990) starring Jiang Wen are probably difficult to find outside China. Director Xie Fei, who is also a professor of Beijing Film Academy, will bring his other work, Women from the Lake of Scented Souls (1993) and a new film made by one of the Academy's graduates Wei Tie, Distance (2006). The director of foucs, though, is Zhang Yimou, with 6 films featured, including the preview of his latest, Curse of the Golden Flower.
