Beijing, China (AHN) - Director Lu Chuan received approval from Chinese authorities to start production of his epic war movie about the Nanjing Massacre, during which an estimated 300,000 Chinese were murdered.
"Nanjing! Nanjing!" will be one of four movies made about the 1937 massacre, according to China's Xinhua News Agency; however, Chuan's is the only one approved by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.
The movie is expected to have a production cost of more than 25.6 million.
Based on the December 1937 Japanese occupation of then-capital Nanjing, the film is expected to feature a scene in which 40,000 people were killed.
The director learned about the massacre while attending a military school, he told Xinhua.
"When I was in the school, I heard so many stories about Nanjing Massacre," he said, "and I have wanted since then to shoot a film about the event."
"Nanjing! Nanjing" is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
