Associated Press reports Disney's latest Chinese-language movie stars The Magic Gourd, based on a famous character in the children book written by Zhang Tianyi in 1950s, about a boy who finds a magic gourd which talks and can fulfill the boy's wishes. The Secret of the Magic Gourd has been adopted into feature film before. The new version will be a mix of live action and animation.
This is a co-production between Disney, China Film Group and Hong Kong's special effects studio Centro Digital Pictures. The film will be released in the summer.

Disney's latest China strategy doesn't involve Mickey, Minnie or Goofy. It's all about an enchanted vegetable.
The studio announced yesterday that it would release a Chinese-language movie, The Magic Gourd, this summer - its first co-production with the state-run China Film Group. The movie, based on a novel written by the late Chinese writer Zhang Tianyi, is about a boy who discovers a gourd - a squash-like vegetable often used in Asian dishes - that grants him wishes. The story has already been adapted into a cartoon by state-run CCTV.
