According to Chinese language media, Hong Kong director Derek Yee's new film in planning has signed up Jackie Chan, Daniel Wu and Japanese actor Ken Watanabe, and will start shooting late this year.
The new film Shinjuku Incident (新宿事件) is set in the Chinese migrants community in Tokyo. According to the director, the film will be more a drama than a action movie. Jackie Chan's production company, JCE Movies, has confirmed Chan's involvement, but didn't provide further details.
It is said the script has been submitted to the Chinese authority for pre-production approval, suggesting the film will also be shot and released in China. The director is reported still looking for an actress in China to play the leading female character.
Although there is a sizable Chinese migrant community in Japan, there are not many Chinese films about them. The recent example is the gangster film The Sleepless Town (1998), directed by Lee Chi-Ngai, starring Takeshi Kaneshiro and Yamamoto Mira.
The film is planned to start shooting in November this year.
