Rediscovering the 4th Generation

Rotterdam Film Festival is showing 12 films by the "4th Generation" of Chinese directors. Most of them were made between 1979 to 1985, before the emergence of the "5th Generation", but one film, Xie Fei's Black Snow (starring Jiang Wen) was made in 1990.

Chinese director Weng Shouming's Fujian Blue is in Tiger Award competition. Dutch director David Verbeek's film Shanghai Trance, which is also in competition, is shot in Shanghai about a group of twenty-somethings in the city.
