Zhang Ziyi plays three women of three generations whose names are the three characters of Mo Li Hua - jasmine. In 30's Shanghai, Mo is raised by her single-parent mother. Her encounter with business man Meng changes her life. Mo soon becomes an actress and Meng's lover. Meng dumps her later, leaving her alone raising her daugther Li. In the 50's, Li marries Jie then realises they can't have children. They decide to adopt a daughter Hua. Li's unhappyness makes her bitter and bitter towards her husband. After Jie's suicide, Li becomes mentally ill and leaves home. In the 80's, Hua marries Du. She discovers Du's having an affair when she's pregnant. She decides to divorce Du and raises the child by herself.

茉，一个由经营着照相馆的单亲母亲养大的18岁少女，在遇到孟老板后一生的命运发生了改变，她成了明星，同时也怀上了孟老板的小孩，那是上个世纪30 年代旧上海的事；茉生下孩子不久就被抛弃了，失去了明星的光彩，她为这个私生女取名叫莉，莉一心要离开这个阴冷的家，嫁给了水泥厂工人邹杰，她决定生个小孩，但她偏偏不能生育，只能从福利院抱了一个女孩，取名叫花，莉对生活仍然极度不满，甚至怀疑自己的丈夫与养女有染，丈夫选择了卧轨自杀，这是上个世纪五六十年代的事；莉精神分裂离家出走了，花找了个男友小杜，在结婚后怀孕不久发现小杜有了外遇，她坚决地提出离婚并把小孩生了下来，这已是上世纪80年代的事……
